Health Care Assistance to migrants and Libyan population (LIBIA/11273/03)

Emergenza Sorrisi has been working in Libya since January 2018 with the aim to provide medical assistance to migrants living in detention centres and to Libyan population with the support of Italian Agency of Development Cooperation.
The first project implemented by Emergenza Sorrisi was “Health Care Assistance to migrants and Libyan population” (LIBIA/11273/03). In the project framework, Emergenza Sorrisi has established Medical Units in the perimeter of Tarek Al Sika, Tarek Al Matar and Tajoura detention centres in Tripoli. The project has also provided health care assistance to migrants living in these detention centres and to hosting population through a Libyan medical staff. The medical staff has been updated in emergency topics as infectious diseases and Psychiatry of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Health care assistance to Libyan population has been made in medical centres near detention centres as Alhuria Health Centre near Tarek Al Sika, Abshusha Health Centre near Tajoura and Abudaralghrafi near Tarek Al Matar.
After the installation, the Medical Units have been donated to Detention Centres directors in accordance to the local partner, the National Centre of Disease Control of Ministry of Health.
The Medical Units have been equipped with all the necessary to be able to play as basic health structure. Nowadays, Medical Units have been used by National Centre of Disease Control to provide health care assistance to migrants.
The project provided also the medical provision devoted to medical assistance to migrants and Libyan population. Medical consumable and small medical equipment have been provided to Medical Units.
In the conclusion of the project – in July 2018 – 992 first medical checks up have been made, which 595 for women and 69 male children and 57 female children (from 0 to 12 years old).
The main diagnosis were hypertension, cardiac problems, stress/depression, traumas, colic, abdominal disease and psychosis.
3 Specialist Medical Centers set up within migrant centers (Tarek Al Sika, Tarek al Matar and Tajoura), 15 Libyan doctors trained (with specialization in psychology and infectology and emergency management) and over 992 visits of which 595 women and 126 children (0 to 12 years of which 57 girls)
Emergency Support to migrants and hosting communities in Janzour and Gharyan areas
The second project cofunded by Italian Agency of Development Cooperation is “Emergency Support to migrants and hosting communities in Janzour and Gharyan areas” (LIBIA/11242/05), which is in progress with the leadership of We World-GVC and in partnership to ICU – Istituto di Cooperazione Universitaria.
Emergenza Sorrisi main component is the health care assistance to migrants in El Nasser detention centre (Zawya) and Dar El Jabal detention centre (Zintan) and the establishment of 2 Medical Units inside the centre’s perimeters, equipped to be able to give special attention to maternal and children health care.
Medical service is provided by Libyan medical staff, updated in emergency topics such as infectious diseases and Psychiatry of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This is an important project pillar because of, through the continuous medical update, the project will guarantee a strong exit strategy.
